Plan the time you will have ashore in Çeşme, the journey from the ferry terminal and your return to Chios, with links for a town walk or an afternoon further afield.

In this guide

A day trip from Chios can leave time for a walk and lunch in Çeşme, or an outing to Alaçatı or Ilıca. The return ferry is the place to start planning. Time ashore begins once you have left the terminal after entry formalities, rather than when the boat docks.

Book with the return in mind

The Ertürk timetable shows sailings for your chosen date in both directions. Alongside the departure, note when the operator requires you at the port for the return. That earlier time determines when you need to stop sightseeing.

Departures use the local time stated on the ticket. Greece and Türkiye do not keep the same time difference all year, so check which country’s time your phone shows after crossing.

From the ferry port into town

Save the terminal address before leaving Chios. The ferry port and leisure marina are different places; show the ticket’s terminal details to your driver when returning. If you have luggage or find walking difficult, you can arrange a taxi or transfer for the first journey too.

Our Çeşme Castle and town-centre walk covers sightseeing after you reach town. If you want to go inside the museum, check its opening hours against your ferry plans.

How much of the day is available?

Disembarkation, entry formalities and the return to the terminal take up part of the gap between sailings. The remaining time needs to cover lunch, walking and journeys between places.

OutingTime needed beyond the journey
Central ÇeşmeA walk, lunch and shopping
AlaçatıExploring the streets, a café or a meal
IlıcaSwimming, drying off and changing

Set the return pickup before deciding on the final stop. Staying in one area on a short visit leaves less of the day in transit.

Town, Alaçatı or the beach?

You can spend the day around Çeşme town without adding another outing. The Çeşme food guide introduces kumru and Aegean dishes to look for at lunch.

For stone streets and cafés, consider Alaçatı; for sand and a swim, Ilıca. With an early return sailing, first work out what both journeys leave for the visit itself. The local transport guide explains the options.

Documents and a phone connection

Entry requirements depend on nationality and the travel document you use. Read Türkiye’s official visa information before booking and check the documents you need to return to Greece.

Keep the ticket and terminal address available offline. Your mobile provider can explain charges and data access in Türkiye, useful for reaching a driver or receiving ferry updates.

Agree on the return meeting point

After an outing to Alaçatı or Ilıca, you will need a place and time to meet the return vehicle. If changing transport in Çeşme town, include that leg too. This gives you a clear time to finish the last coffee or shopping stop.

Before buying food or drink to bring back, check Greek customs rules. Keep the number used for your ferry booking reachable for changes from the operator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Çeşme from Chios in one day?
Check whether the sailings on your chosen date leave enough time ashore after port formalities. A town-based itinerary involves fewer transfers.
Can I include Alaçatı?
Possibly, depending on your ferry times and transport. Allow for both the journey out and the return to the terminal.
Is the ferry terminal the same as the marina?
No. Locate the terminal shown on your ticket and use its exact name for the return journey.
Is there always a one-hour time difference?
No. Check the local times for your date instead of assuming a year-round difference.
