At a glance
On a breezy morning in Çeşme, the nearest beach and the most comfortable beach may be different places. A bay can look inviting in yesterday’s photographs and feel quite different when you arrive. Start with the direction and strength of the wind, then consider the shore, the forecast waves and the journey home.
Ayayorgi is worth checking first in northerly weather. The bay has shelter from northern winds and a choice of beach-club businesses. Conditions can still change while you are there.
Ask your chosen venue about conditions beside its own swimming area. A useful question is: “Are waves reaching your beach today, and are there any restrictions on swimming?” It tells you more than asking whether the weather is nice. Check the booking too: a restaurant table may not include a lounger or access to an evening event.
You will also see Altınkum recommended for windy days. Its fine sand and cool water are reasons to consider it, but a northerly forecast alone does not establish that it will be calm. Check the actual shore before committing to a long journey with children or a large amount of beach equipment.
Poyraz means wind from the northeast; lodos comes from the southwest. In a forecast, a northeasterly wind comes from the northeast, rather than blowing towards it. Use that direction when looking at the opening of a bay on the map.
A change to lodos calls for a fresh look at your plans. Compare shores exposed to the southwest with the northern coastline; Ilıca and Boyalık can be included in that comparison. Check the particular section you plan to visit before setting off.
The Turkish marine forecast places Çeşme at the boundary between its North and South Aegean reporting areas. Read the part relevant to your destination and the hours you intend to stay. Wave heights for a broad sea area are not measurements taken at the water’s edge in an individual bay.
| Shore | Why consider it? | What to check that morning |
|---|---|---|
| Ayayorgi | A bay sheltered from northern winds, with beach-club venues | Conditions at the booked venue and what admission includes |
| Ilıca | A broad sandy beach close to accommodation in Ilıca | Waves at the shore and local swimming notices |
| Boyalık | Sand between Çeşme town and Ilıca | The exact entrance and conditions on that section |
| Altınkum | Fine sand and noticeably cool water | Waves and whether cooler water suits your group |
| Pırlanta and Çark | Well-known wind-sport shores | Separation between swimmers and sports equipment |
Our Çeşme beach guide covers the wider choice of sand, rocky coves and serviced beach days.

Shallow water is only one part of choosing a family beach. Breaking waves, blowing sand and the walk from your drop-off point can matter just as much. Follow flags and instructions at the beach; a description written months ago cannot tell you whether swimming is appropriate today. The family guide to Çeşme also compares accommodation and daily travel.
If you are staying in Ilıca and local conditions suit you, there is little reason to spend the morning crossing the peninsula. If you do change coast, arrange the return before setting off. Nearby bays on a map do not necessarily share a direct minibus route. Use the transport guide to check how the journey fits together.
The regional marine report from the Turkish meteorological service shows wind direction, strength and predicted waves. Check the issue date and time slots. The figures cover a broad sea area; check the beach itself too.
If there is a severe-weather or local no-swimming warning, postpone the swim rather than treating a sheltered bay as a way around it. You could spend time around Çeşme Castle and the town centre, with the castle’s current opening arrangements checked separately.
