Ephesus is possible as a day trip from Çeşme, but it deserves a full day including travel and the walk through the site. It is not a quick stop after a morning at the beach. Choose your transport, entrance and return meeting point before leaving. A journey starting at your actual Çeşme accommodation is more useful than a generic set of directions from İzmir.

Driving or booking a tour

With your own car or a rental, navigate to the Ephesus entrance you intend to use, rather than Selçuk town centre. The upper and lower gates are in different places. If you enter at one and leave at the other, your car remains where you parked it. Decide between returning to the same gate and arranging transport between the two.

For a tour, establish the Çeşme collection point, ticket inclusions, guiding language and return destination. Ask whether the Terrace Houses are included and whether lunch or shopping stops form part of the programme. The title “Ephesus tour” does not guarantee hotel collection or every additional visit.

If you want an independent visit without driving, book the return as carefully as the outward transfer. Confirm waiting time, departure time and any change of gate in writing. Add this day separately when using our guide to how long to spend in Çeşme.

Can you use public transport?

Public transport involves several separate legs: Çeşme to İzmir, a connection within the city, a southbound rail journey towards Selçuk and the final transfer to the archaeological site. Selçuk station is not the Ephesus entrance.

Hilal is an interchange between the İzmir metro and İZBAN. Check the southbound service and any Tepeköy connection needed for Selçuk using the official İZBAN journey times. A train heading south does not necessarily continue all the way to Selçuk.

Confirm your Çeşme–İzmir journey and the last useful return on the same date. Engineering work or interchange changes can alter the plan. Work backwards from the final connection when deciding when to leave the ruins. If you have only one spare day and want to avoid managing connections, compare the full cost of a tour or transfer too.

Plan the walk before the photographs

Identify your entrance and exit, then arrange the main sights along that walk. Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre are principal stops. A one-way walk can reduce backtracking, provided your return transport meets you at the other gate.

Allow time beyond the library façade. Streets, public buildings and houses help explain how the city functioned. With a guide, ask about daily life, trade and water supply as well as the names of the monuments.

The Terrace Houses have a separate entrance within the archaeological site. Check the actual ticket coverage before buying. Ephesus Museum in Selçuk is also a different place from the ruins; if you want to add it, inspect its own opening hours rather than relying on the site’s schedule.

Opening hours and ticket checks

On 22 October 2026, the official Ephesus visitor page showed opening at 08:00, closure at 18:00 and ticket-office closure at 17:30, with daily opening. Check again close to your visit because seasonal arrangements and special announcements can change these times. Do not assume night visits operate on every date.

The page states that MüzeKart is valid for Turkish citizens. Overseas visitor tickets, different card products and access to additional areas should not be treated as equivalent. Check the official purchase options for your visitor category and chosen additional areas. A price on an old ticket photograph is not a reliable budget for a new trip.

What to bring and what to leave out

Wear footwear suited to prolonged walking and bring water, sun protection and an appropriate layer for the weather. Open areas and stone surfaces need more preparation than a brief urban stroll. If you use a wheelchair, travel with a pushchair or need step-free access, discuss the currently accessible route with the site before visiting. Do not assume every part is step-free.

With children, choose a few main stops and leave time for breaks. Adding Şirince and several other attractions can crowd an already substantial day. For another excursion closer to Çeşme, consider our Urla day trip; for days on the peninsula, start with things to do in Çeşme.

Practical Notes

The official page checked on 22 October 2026 showed 08:00–18:00 visiting hours and ticket-office closure at 17:30. Recheck for your date; arriving just before the ticket office closes leaves little time to explore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Selçuk station at the Ephesus entrance?
No. Include the final transfer from the station to the archaeological site.
Can I enter and exit at different gates?
You can plan a walk between the two gates, but must separately arrange the return to a car left at the first one.
